This means filling out a form (which we highly recommend you download and fill out before you come), standing in line at the visitor center at the O street gate to turn it in, then waiting for them to do the background check, then getting photographed and finger printed (we kid you not), and finally getting a temporary pass to show the guards at the gate (that's assuming you are willing to walk to the museum, who knows what extra hoops are involved if you want to drive on base - but you better make sure all your shots are all in order.). For the uninitiated, the Washington Navy Yard where this museum is located has very tight security - if you want to get on base to see the museum, you have to submit to a background check. We tried visiting this museum four years ago and frankly ran out of time and patience getting the paperwork processed to get access.

Takes a little longer but totally worth it. If you do not have a military ID you need to stop at the O Street Gate and check in as a visitor. The tricky part of visiting the museum is access to the Washington Navy Yard. There is no where to eat nearby so plan accordingly or pack a picnic lunch you can enjoy in the shade at the picnic tables. Their are restrooms, out door displays, picnic tables, and a gift shop too with Navy toys for kids. The Saturday we visited for a official Navy function Honor Flight WWII veterans mostly in wheel chairs were visiting. The museum has wonderful exhibits of interest for young kids to seniors. I visited the museum as a child growing up in Washington DC and it has matured wonderfully over the decades with attractive display cabinets and huge static exhibits of US Navy historical artifacts some dating back to the Revolutionary War. As a retired US Naval Officer I can easily say the National Museum of the United States Navy which has been located aboard the historical Washington Navy Yard and dates back to the Civil War is one of the finest military museums I have had the pleasure of touring.
